Courtney Associates is a dynamic Management Development and Training Organisation based in the North West of England, headed up by two Directors – Tom & Denise Courtney.

Tom Courtney – CIPD

Development and Training Courses North West Tom Courtney is an inspirational and motivational speaker who has specialised in Training and Development Consultancy since 1986.  Tom is a specialist in the field of “Leadership and Management” having had the privilege of working with some of the world’s leading clients.  In his 29 years experience he has trained and inspired around 50,000 people through a wide variety of training interventions and has spoken at numerous national and international conferences.

Tom has provided successful business solutions to clients across a broad spectrum of industries in both the public and private sectors. He gained membership to the Chartered Institute of Training and Development in 1987 and worked as both a Management Trainer and Change Agent within the Scottish Health Service in Edinburgh, Ayr and Aberdeen, liaising closely with Price Waterhouse Coopers in major organisational change programmes.

Following on from this post, he moved into the world of Consultancy, becoming a Director of an integrated HR & Recruitment Consultancy. His role enabled him to build and develop the Training function and deliver training and development interventions nationally and internationally, working in a diverse range of countries such as France, Belgium, Azerbaijan, the Middle East, the Far East and the USA as well as to a range of multi national groups throughout the UK. In addition to the delivery of training Tom has extensive experience in the field of Mentoring as well as setting up and Project Managing a range of Mentoring initiatives. He was integral in the development of the first Business to Business Oil Sector Mentoring initiative co-ordinated by the Department of Trade and Industry. He is also an accredited Belbin practitioner and in 2002 enabled his consultancy to become Scotland’s first agent for the delivery of Belbin Services. In 2006 he also became accredited to practice the DISC behavioural profiling tool.

Tom has held Non-Executive Directorships within the Education Business Partnership arena, he actively supports Social Enterprise initatives and has worked with the BBC, appearing in two series of the educational, training and personal development programme – “One Life to Live”.


Management Development and Training North West Denise Courtney – MA; DMS; HNC

Denise has been involved in the field of Education and Training since 1997 following the completion of her Masters Degree, specialising in Total Quality Management and Service Delivery, at Manchester Metropolitan University. As a manager in the Health, Education and Legal sectors, she has specialised in the design and implementation of systems, procedures and quality assurance practices. She assisted in the development of a “first of its kind” centralised undergraduate Admissions Service for University College Salford and was integral in the set up of an inaugural “one stop shop” for training and education services on behalf of Edexcel (formerly BTEC) Examinations Board. A qualified TDLB Assessor, she worked as an external consultant in NVQ Management qualifications working across a diverse range of occupational sectors. She also worked as an external examiner, on behalf of Edexcel in the field of IT.

Working for corporate legal firm Addleshaw Goddard, Denise was instrumental in setting up, managing and driving forward a large organisational Change Initiative which involved the implementation of a new way of working within the Real Estate Division. Denise performed a cross-site role and was responsible for the recruitment, induction, training, development and management of two paralegal teams in both their Leeds and Manchester offices. This was a unique initiative that involved the commoditisation of legal services within the Real Estate Department. Its focus was to develop standard approaches to the routine tasks that made up commercial property transactions that did not need to be carried out by qualified lawyers, in order to achieve more efficient use of resources and a reduction in costs, without compromising on quality. Due to the overwhelming success of this Project, Addleshaw Goddard have since rolled out a similar model across other departments within the firm and are now nationally recognised as “leading the way” in delivering a more commoditised service to its clients.

Denise’s primary role within the organisation is Marketing and Business Development. She is also responsible for the internal management and delivery of a range of consultancy services across all sectors in the following areas: Commoditisation in the Legal Services sector; Quality Assurance; Systems Development; DiSC Behavioural Profiling; Training & Development Audit and Staff Surveys. Denise also provides a range of One to One Coaching services in the field of Management.
